Boiler Rooms

Sterett was equipped with four fossil fuel burning boilers manufactured by Combustion Engineering. These boilers generated steam for powering the ship. The standard operating pressure output was 1,200 psi. Most WW II ships operated at 600 psi or lower. These four boilers were located in two separate boiler rooms, designated #1 and #2. Boiler Room #1 was located forward of the mess decks and Boiler Room #2 was located aft of the mess decks.

The sailors who manned these hot and dangerous spaces were a special breed of sailors commonly referred to as "snipes". Temperatures here routinely exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Located in these spaces were the tanks that held fresh water, one for boiler feed water and and the other for all other freshwater uses including water for crew's showers and drinking.
