The Chief's mess or CPO mess was often referred to as the "Goat Locker" in deference to the seniority of the chiefs in the enlisted ranks. Chiefs are Chief Petty Officers ( E-7, E-8 and E-9). Their mess was located aboard Sterett just forward of the crew's mess, amidships and one deck below the weather deck.
The chief's mess was more informal than the wardroom but still more opulent than the crew's mess. Finances in the chief's mess were ran similarly to those of the wardroom with cost being apportioned out among all the members.
Once an enlisted man advanced to E-7, he underwent an initiation in the ranks of the Chiefs. This privilege was not taken lightly nor were the responsibilities that Chiefs held. They were the disciplinary and technical bridge between the officers and the enlisted crewmen.
