Engine Rooms

Sterett's main engines were steam powered turbines capable of generating 85,000 horse power. These two turbines were manufactured by De Laval and delivered power to Sterett's two screws via reduction gears.

Sterett had two engine rooms designated #1 and #2. Engine room #1 was forward of the mess decks and drove the starboard screw. Engine room #2 was aft of the mess decks and powered the port screw.

Located in these engine rooms was also a myriad of equipment such as the turbine driven electrical generators. Also located here were the "main evaps". These systems took sea water and evaporated it to produce pure fresh water for the steam plant and for crew use. These spaces were also very hot and noisy.
