Sterett from her first year became a flagship. Her first flag duties were for the flag of DesRon 3. The flag officer's stateroom was just below the bridge along the port side, opposite where the Captain's stateroom was located on the starboard side. A separate galley was located between these two areas for the preparation of meals for both the Captain and the Flag Officer.
Sterett's first flag duties accomodated a small flag contingency. No special arrangements for the other flag personnel were made. In Sterett's later years as a cruiser Sterett's flag accomodations grew as the size of the Flag group grew. In 1991 a completely new area of the superstructure was added amidships to accomodate flag personnel.
