The Sterett was equipped with a helicopter deck with a hanger large enough to accommodate the LAMPS SH-2 helicopter. At the time of the Sterett's design the LAMPS helo was not yet developed. At that time the DASH unmanned reconnaissance and Anti-Submarine drone was the intended resident on Sterett's helo deck. This project was abandoned prior to Sterett's commissioning.
During the Vietnam era, a variety of helicopters were carried aboard the Sterett. Sterett hosted the Kaman UH-2 that was the forerunner of the LAMPS program the SH-2 Kaman Seasprite of the LAMPS program to H-3 Sea King search and rescue helicopters.
